(ABOUT) 'FAR AWAY'

I fell in love with this song when I heard it from an episode of COLD CASE. It's an investigative drama about solving old crimes from police records already gathering dust. Almost every episode is "stand alone", having different stories or "cases" each time.

Its most critical scene is always the act of police detectives handcuffing the offender towards the end of the story, with a song from that particular time when the crime was committed as background music. The whole scene is in slow motion, of course. Very dramatic. The music itself plays an integral part of the story. Some of the unsolved crimes are from a totally different era, even from decades past, so the main culprit and other involved suspects in the story are already very old. Similarly, the song will also be 'classic'. It only proves to show that you can't really get away from what you did, even if it was from a long time ago.

'Far Away' was from an episode where a single mother got separated from her baby during a fire. Her baby got swapped with someone else's (dead) baby in between the confusion. The ending reveals that the baby was actually alive, reuniting with his mother as a young boy several years after. The musical score is brilliant; Jerry Bruckheimer is a genius in melodramatic imagery!

COLD CASE used to be a constant habit for me to watch every Saturday morning. It had a very significant influence on my musical preference and "Last Song Syndrome". I only get to like some songs, which I already knew years before, after hearing it from the show. I am a late bloomer indeed.
